But now we are completely bed bug free and we sleep in peace.

So, the first sign of having bed bugs is:
1. Sign 1: Unexplained Bites on Your Skin
If you keep waking up with red, itchy bites on your skin, it is a very good sign that you have bed bugs. If you are dark-skinned like me, the bites may not look red, but they will be itchy. Bed bugs feed on blood, usually while you’re sleeping, and their bites often appear in clusters or straight lines.
Here are some characteristics of bed bug bites:
- Appearance: Small, red, and slightly swollen welts that may become itchy.
- Location: Bites usually occur on exposed areas of skin, such as the arms, legs, neck, face, and hands. This happens because we usually don't cover those parts of our body when we sleep.
- Patterns: Bed bug bites often form in rows or clusters, as the bug moves along your skin looking for a feeding spot. The bed bug will bite you on one place, then move, and bite you in another place. So, the bites will be in rows or clusters.
It’s important to note that not everyone reacts to bed bug bites, so you may not experience visible bites even if you have an infestation. This is the reason some people say that they have bed bugs, but it seems the bed bugs only bite them. It doesn't mean the bed bugs are only biting them, or maybe only biting you, it just means that the other people do not react to the bed bug bites as much as you do.
I know it can be frustrating especially if you're trying to explain to people and they don't see the bed bugs. They can make you feel like you're going crazy. Let's move on to sign number 2.
Sign 2: Rusty or Dark Spots on Your Bedding
Another major sign of having bed bugs is finding small, rust-colored or dark spots on your bed sheets, pillowcases, or mattress. These spots are typically caused by bed bug excrement, that is bed bug poop, which can leave behind stains where the bugs feed or rest.
Here's what to look for:
- Small, dark spots: These could be bed bug fecal matter, which is usually dark brown or black and can be smeared or absorbed into fabric.
- Blood stains: If you accidentally crush a bed bug after it’s fed, you may find small, rusty-red bloodstains on your sheets or pillowcases.
It's easier to see the dark spots on your sheets if you have light-colored sheets like white, yellow, or a very light gray. It's harder to see the spots if your sheets are black, or dark-colored, like dark blue. If you think you have bed bugs, change your sheets to light-colored sheets. Inspect your bedding, mattress seams, and pillowcases for these stains, especially after waking up. These marks are a strong indication that bed bugs are feeding nearby. Now, what about sign number 3?
Sign 3: Shed Bed Bug Skins
Bed bugs go through several life stages, and as they grow, they shed their outer exoskeleton. These shed skins, also known as exuviae, can be found near areas where bed bugs are hiding or feeding.
Signs of shed bed bug skins:
- Translucent or yellowish-brown exoskeletons: These are about the size of a bed bug (roughly the size of an apple seed) and may vary in size depending on the stage of development.
- Locations: Look for shed skins in mattress seams, along baseboards, and in the crevices of furniture, especially around the bed.
Finding shed bed bug skins is a clear sign that bed bugs are not only present but actively growing and reproducing in your home.

Sign 4. Musty or Sweet Odor
Bed bugs release pheromones, which can create a distinct, unpleasant smell when large numbers of them are present. This smell is often described as a musty, sweet odor, similar to the scent of overripe raspberries or almonds. In severe infestations, this odor can become quite noticeable, especially in areas where bed bugs are hiding.
Here is where you might smell this musty or sweet odor:
- Near your bed: The odor is most likely to be concentrated near your bed, as bed bugs tend to hide in and around bedding.
- Furniture or carpeting: If bed bugs have spread to other parts of your home, you may notice the smell in couches, chairs, or even in carpeting.
